The New Testament encourages us to move past elementary teachings and into a mature life in Christ
to spiritually stop drinking milk like infants and move on to solid food. This parody provides a fun and yet poignant example of how silly it is for adults to eat like children. It's time to Grow Up!
Main Point: Paul tells us that it’s time to put childish ways
aside and grow up in the Lord.
Synopsis:
- When
four guys go out to a steakhouse for lunch, it’s quickly apparent that
only one of them is on solid food three order from the Kid’s Menu. .
- This
parody of Paul’s admonishment to get off of milk and eat solid food is a
comedic yet serious example of who foolish it is when believers refuse to
grow up in the Lord.
- The
New Testament teaching that we must move past elementary teachings and
grow into mature Christians is demonstrated here as only one man eats
steak as the other three men drink juice and milk out of bottles and sippy
cups.
- At one
point one of the men exchanges a wave with a baby across the restaurant—as
the one mature man asks how their milk is—the guys respond that it’s
good—apparently comfortable with their immaturity—although to others it is
clearly pathetic.
- Good
production quality—and the visual of grown men drinking out of bottles
clearly gets the message across.
Application:
- This
is a non-threatening way to deal with the issue of Christians “growing
up”.
- As new
polls indicate that fewer Americans identify themselves as Christians,
it’s imperative that those who are believers grow up so they can be
effective servants to advance the Kingdom of God.
- Paul
encourages us to not be content in our maturity—but to desire solid food.
Suggested Uses:
- Great
sermon-starter on growing in the faith.
- Also appropriate
for men’s Bible study
Biblical Reference:
- Hebrews
5:14 But solid food is for the mature.
