It takes a constant act of the will to pursue God amidst the sea of distractions that this world offers. A city -- furious with activity -- provides a striking backdrop for one man's quest to focus his heart on God.
Main Point: We live in a jungle of distractions but Jesus has
overcome the world.
Synopsis:
- The
distractions of city nightlife are the impetus for a young man to cry out
to the Lord to find peace amidst the urban jungle.
- Throughout
the video, the young man drives and walks around the city --talking to
God.
- He
comments at the beginning that it’s a crazy place—“What happened to your
creation?”
- Disturbed
by the distractions, he assesses “any addiction starts with a
distraction”.
- Wisdom
is demonstrated as he prays that the Lord has to take over his wants and
needs.
- Text
messages reinforce part of his prayer in places: “Lord let me focus” and
“Lord give me strength”.
- His
life is a prayer: “Jesus draw me close to you. I need the peace that your
shelter provides I this broken world…place my feet upon your path…I want
to see people and love people like you…you have overcome the world. Amen.”
- Filmed
entirely at night—use of fast forward motions, red tones, and probing
music emphasize the pace and distractions.
Application:
- The
fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom—this guy knows that he is
utterly dependent upon the Lord to keep him in peace and living right.
- A wise
person is one who knows there are pitfalls—this young man is fully aware
of the lure and distractions of city life.
- Our
proper response is not to live as hermits but to live in the world but not
of it.
- As
this guy looks over the city—he is not repelled by his assessment but
rather asks the Lord to allow him to see people as the Lord sees them.
- We are
the light of the world—this guy understands that he has a role for good in
the city with all its distractions.
Suggested Uses:
· Sermon-starter
on John 16:33 (see below)
- Also appropriate for college-aged
