Have you ever had a roommate that was over-concerned with your eating habits or cleanliness? How about a roommate that was over-concerned about your salvation? Meet your live-in evangelist...
Main Point: We can’t win converts by trying to trick them into
salvation. It just doesn’t work that way.
Synopsis:
- A
roommate stoops to lying and pouring on a heap of condemnation in his
unsuccessful attempts at converting his roommate Jared.
- Opens
and closes on exterior of house—where inside a modern-day zealot is trying
to convert Jared—first by trying to trick him into signing a statement of
faith. When Jared rebuffs him, he tells him that “ A soul is forever-that
is a very long time.”
- Next
Jared’s roommate is grilling steaks and reminds him that Hell “burns on
the souls of the unrepentant”. As they eat dinner, Jared is told that the
steaks have been tried by fire.
- In
another scene Jared watches as his roommate is petitioning God to crush
him. He’s then subjected to his roommate waking him as he blows a trumpet
–warning him this could have been the Lord returning. The next morning as
Jared eats cereal, his roommate walks past the kitchen wearing a red devil
suit.
- Jared
finally has enough when his roommate is chained to a table—signing hymns
and proclaiming that he wont’ leave the table until Jared becomes a
Christian. After Jared flees the house, his roommate yells that he can’t
run forever.
- Fans
of the Office will like this comedic approach—as Jared the unsaved
roommate looks at the camera as the straight man who is observing and
tolerating the insanity around him. At one point he says, “He keeps trying
to save me.”
- High
quality production—the acting, set, comedic pacing has the feel of a
sitcom.
Application:
- In our
over zealousness, we can actually drive people away from God.
- The
goodness of the Lord draws people to him.
- Sometimes,
non-believers think Christians are a little flaky with good reason.
- This
video provides an excellent resource for what not to do.
- What
Jared’s roommate fails to see is the same thing many of us do – that God
woes us through relationship.
- The
hallmarks of the Christian faith are righteousness, peace, and joy –if
we’re not exuding those, chances are people aren’t going to want what we
have.
